Sustainable construction in the spotlight: Hilde Carens represents Nirmana Real Estate in Brussels

On 4 June 2025, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Belgium organised a thematic day on sustainable construction. The event took place in Brussels and brought together companies and construction experts from Belgium and the Netherlands. Nirmana Real Estate also took part, with Hilde Carens as a speaker.

The aim of the day? To share knowledge, inspire and encourage collaboration on sustainable, future-oriented building solutions. Innovative construction projects were presented, while participants also had the opportunity to network and hold one-to-one meetings with potential partners.

How can we build more sustainably on a large scale?

Hilde Carens presented Nirmana Real Estate’s ambitious plans. By 2050, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of our buildings by 60–80%. This is no small challenge, as we manage more than 800 buildings.

Hilde explained that we are not looking to create a single showcase building, but to develop structural solutions that can be applied on a large scale. These include circular materials, reusing construction materials during demolition and smart technologies that can be scaled up step by step.

However, this also presents challenges: higher costs, technologies that are not yet sufficiently mature… Hilde therefore called on the market: which materials, technologies or partnerships can help us make this both achievable and affordable?

Building the future

Through her presentation, Hilde gave the audience a clear picture of where we want to go. She demonstrated that Nirmana Real Estate does not merely talk about sustainability, but takes concrete action.
Together, we continue to explore ways to build more intelligently, sustainably and cost-effectively.
