Will the Colruyt store in Temse set a new standard?

European regulations concerning the EU Taxonomy have major implications for our businesses. More sustainable construction is becoming the norm, and Nirmana Real Estate aims to remain at the forefront. The new Colruyt Lowest Prices store in Temse could well set the standard we need.

“Producing less waste, reusing more materials and recycling them to a high standard: that will become the norm. Temse shows us how far we can already go today”, says Hilde Carens, sustainable construction materials project manager. The new Colruyt Lowest Prices store in Temse will be an important milestone in achieving our European objectives. Urban mining and circular construction form the common thread throughout the building project.

What is urban mining?

Urban mining involves using innovative solutions to collect construction materials and transform them into new, reusable products. Our primary focus is on concrete because of its considerable environmental impact and the large quantities we use.

In Temse, we have made significant efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of concrete. As concrete accounts for the largest share of our construction process, substantially reducing its environmental impact also offers the greatest potential gains.

The new store in Temse will open in December, but the coming weeks promise to be particularly important for our sustainability vision. “We are analysing all the data we have collected. We are also assessing the feasibility of our approach. Is it achievable for our contractors? Can our teams extend this sustainable approach to other projects? The financial analysis will also provide us with many valuable new insights”, says Hilde Carens.
